Same ingredient. Different uses on the label.
If the names seem mixed up, there is a reason. The ingredient matches. The uses listed on the labels do not.
Myth to test
Do tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) products have the same approved uses?
Short answer
These brands have different approved uses, according to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approvals checked in September 2026.
Read the name beside the reason for treatment
A label is the official information for that medicine. It tells you which uses the FDA has reviewed.
- Mounjaro's label covers type 2 diabetes, a condition involving high blood sugar.
- Mounjaro is also approved to reduce heart attacks, strokes and deaths from heart or blood-vessel disease in high-risk adults with type 2 diabetes.
- Zepbound's label covers long-term weight reduction for adults: those with obesity, or those with overweight and a health problem linked to weight.
- It also covers moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity.
Translate the terms before comparing care
Do not let the names do all the work. Ask what the treatment is meant to address in your own health.
- Obesity is a medical weight category; ask how that category is being assessed for you.
- Obstructive sleep apnea involves repeated breathing interruptions during sleep.
- Ask which brand and which use would be written in the care plan.
- Ask the insurer about that exact combination, rather than the ingredient alone.
