Work out the cost
A prescription and a payment decision are separate.
It is frustrating to hear yes at a visit and still have a price question. When asking the insurer, include both the proposed product's exact name and what it would treat.
Myth to test
Once a prescription is written, does the insurer have to pay?
Short answer
Eligibility alone cannot settle who pays: the plan still applies its covered-medicine list and approval requirements.
Translate the insurance words
These terms describe different steps. Ask which one is holding up the answer.
- A plan's formulary tells you which medicines it includes in coverage.
- Prior authorization is the plan's approval step before it agrees to pay.
- A copay is the part of a covered bill assigned to you.
- Ask for the answer in writing, with the exact product, its pen or bottle type and the reason for treatment included.
Check the route before counting a discount
As of September 2026, tirzepatide savings cards require private or workplace insurance and exclude Medicare, Medicaid and military coverage.
- Medicare members cannot use those savings cards, but may still be able to pay the drug maker's cash price outside insurance.
- Ask whether your plan covers the proposed use, not just whether it knows the drug name.
- Ask what information the person treating you has to send.
- Ask what you would owe if the plan declines, or if a discount ends.
